He sighed aloud as he was walked on an open road, there was nothing but grass plains for miles and miles. He would look up, and get slightly excited at each road sign that he saw but then would become less enthused, lurch over, and sigh again for the nearest city was still more than hundreds of miles away. The duffle bag he held in his hand had looked worn yet both his fur and his clothes were oddly clean for someone who was a drifter. His thoughts were becoming louder and louder until he finally came right out with it and began to argue with himself.

“Couldn’t call a cab or something huh?!” he had strangely began to answer himself as well

“No nitwit! We are absolutely broke how in the hell would we afford a cab” he had stopped walking and even began to swing his feet and hands at some nonexistent figure

“Oh! Right” he stretched out the words sarcastically “Yes of course. Could you imagine if we had only just been recently living somewhere where there were people with money!? Ya know the kind of people that would have been more than generous enough to offer a chauffeur to drive us to our location”

“Why don’t you shut up?! You could have easily recommended that fifty miles ago! Now shut up and let’s keep going!” He began walking again and in the midst of it his tail went in between his legs and his ears had fell flat against his head. He had struck his own forehead and as he kept his hand there his body bent back causing his face to look up at the sky. “Aye Coqui, you surely are a loon. Here you are looking for permanence and not only are you completely incapable of committing to it anywhere you go but you also talk and scream at yourself and god knows how many people that’s going to attract.

As his face looked up at the sky he could see it was getting dark and he had absolutely no idea what the time had been. He jerked forward and rubbed at his eyes from the feeling of a cold sting that had hit it. He then felt another that managed to dodge his messy hair and land in just the right spot to where he could feel the drop hit his head. His eyes widened in panic and he began to run forward as quickly as he could trying to shield himself.

“No no no no no no no! Please! Anything but that please!” he pleaded as he held the duffle over his head but his begging had no effect the sky began to pour relentlessly over him soaking him instantly.

He dropped to the ground as hundreds of raindrops pelted his body and he had begun to wail like a lost child. He had felt the need to call it quits and just curled up in the middle of the road and waited there and as the night drew closer and closer his body shook from the sheer cold he was experiencing. His ear had perked up as he felt the ground vibrate somewhat weakly. He knew exactly what had been coming and did not move a muscle instead he laid there looking in the opposite direction and had accepted his fate. He heard a roaring engine come closer and closer the ground vibrating more furiously as he stared blankly at the rain filled darkness ahead of him. In an instant he heard a loud “BANG” and shut his eyes tight. He opened them again to find that he had actually been unharmed.

He stood up and turned back looking at the vehicle that had stopped just before him. A thick black smoke had been expelling from the front of the car and the high beams had been on causing him to shield his eyes. As he stood there trying to see what had happened he saw a rather portly figure step out of the car. He saw the shadowy figure pop open the hood and inspect the inside, having no idea what to do the figure just put his hands on his sides and cursed into the open air. He somehow managed to notice the presence of the young man behind him and turned to see him.

“Hey what are you doing out here? Were you just lying on the road just now?” the monotonous man said bringing up his voice slightly to speak past the sound of the rain.

Coqui just looked at him blankly as he came closer. The large figured seemed to beckon him into the vehicle to which Coqui followed and sat down in the passenger seat. He was finally able to get a good view of the character next to him in the driver seat. He was an otter a rather obese otter at that he found it quite strange to see one of his size, his muzzle had started to gray and the rest of his countenance made him seem overall down on his luck. Another thing Coqui had noticed right away was that his fur was rather dingy for an otter. The otter had made a quick phone call and as he hung up he took a deep sigh and looked over at the young man next to him. The old curmudgeon hadn’t exactly known why he had offered this creature a seat into his own vehicle he generally didn’t trust anyone but then again he couldn’t just leave a child out in that sort of weather. Coqui who had still been shivering turned to him and said

“Th-th-thank you sir. May I ask what just h-h-happened?” his green eyes had met with the gray muzzle’s before him.
“I don’t know my rotten engine finally decided to go kaputt I guess. I called for a tow they should be here in an hour they said” he had replied in an angered tone. “Before we go on what exactly were you doing out in the rain all by yourself?”
In the midst of his question he was trying to figure out what species the young man was that sat next to him but his fur was so wet it was rather difficult to tell. On one hand he seemed to be very feline like but on the other some of his fur had seemed reminiscent of a raccoon.

“I was trying to get to Satville”

“Satville? I just happened to be driving to that wretched hell hole”

“I know it isn’t much of town but it was the closest place to get to from where I was” he said his tone trailing slightly off

“What exactly are you looking for in Satville?” the otter raised his brow as he tried to get to the bottom of this case.

“I...I…” he leaned his head to the window and his ears drooped down and his eyes half closed in complete glum “I don’t have anything there. I just figured I’d find a better way to survive there than out here”
“Where would you stay in Satville exactly?” his voice had oddly become concerned something he was not really used to

“I would have to live in the streets somewhere or maybe some homeless shelter until they could no longer house me there then maybe find a way into the next city and figure somethings out there if I have to.”

The otter had suddenly had an impulse that was completely against him but something about the young man next to him caused him to overlook himself to which he said

“You need a place to stay huh? I might live in a bit of a shit-hole but truth is I’m barely making rent as it is, but you can stay with me until you can walk on your own two feet”

Coqui turned to him shocked and just wrapped his arms around the fat otter and squeezed him real tight. “Thank you thank you thank you! I promise I’ll look for a job and I’ll do all I can to help pay rent and I swear it’ll be like I was never there! Thank you so much sir”

The otter smiled for the first time that day and hugged the boy back. As he let go the car had been raised up from the front and they had both been staring at a large chain that seem to suspend the front of the car in the air.
“Guess that’s the tow truck guy” the otter said as he sat back in his seat “Must’ve just decided to keep us in here to avoid having us walk out in the rain. By the way kid what’s your name?”

“Co kee” he annunciated it slowly since he had been used to people getting it wrong so many times.

“What an odd name. Coqui right?” he asked

The green eyed animal confirmed his pronunciation with a nod.

“My name is Mudge Musk nice to meet you Coqui” he extended his paw

“May I call you Mr.Mudge? I could call you Mr.Musk but it makes you sound like a smelly 60’s pornstar” he giggled as he said it.

“Ha! I like how your mind works. Mr.Mudge is fine”

They both sat in the car in a mutual silence the rest of the way home both feeling there day was somewhat brightened by the other.
Ok so here's my prologue! Yes this is how the adventure starts my friends. The name is pretty lame I know but if anyone has a better idea for what I should call it fell free to tell me. If you have not read my journal please do so I would honestly appreciate it. marc19d2k.deviantart.com/journ…
